Total Productive Maintenance
AFTER THE TRAINING, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
Create a world-class, safe work environment that produces higher-quality output;
Enable a quicker and more efficient production process;
Implement a holistic approach to empower shop-floor employees to take responsibility for equipment maintenance;
Avoid equipment breakdowns and ensure the production line is running at all times.
Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a team- and shop-floor based initiative. Getting operators involved in maintaining their own equipment and emphasizing proactive and preventive maintenance lays a foundation for improved production (fewer breakdowns, stops, and defects).
As a holistic approach to equipment maintenance, the main goals of TPM are:
- No breakdowns
- No small stops or slow running
- No defects
- No accidents
TPM emphasizes proactive and preventative maintenance to maximize the operational efficiency of equipment. It blurs the distinction between the roles of production and maintenance by placing a strong emphasis on empowering operators to help maintain their equipment.
The implementation of a TPM program creates a shared responsibility for equipment that encourages greater involvement by plant floor workers. In the right environment this can be very effective in improving productivity (increasing uptime, reducing cycle times, and eliminating defects).
TPM needs 5S as a foundation and then builds upon it with the following pillars:
- Autonomous Maintenance
- Planned Maintenance
- Quality Integration
- Focused Improvement
- Early Equipment Management
- Training & Education
- Safety, Health, Environment
- TPM in Administration
